How big should a kitchen island be?

A functional kitchen island should be at least 4 feet long and 2 feet deep. For seating, add at least 12" of overhang. For a prep sink, plan for at least 6 feet of length. We size every island specifically for the kitchen's proportions and the homeowner's intended use.
