White Oak Flooring Guide
White oak has become the dominant hardwood species in luxury residential design — and for good reason. Its tight grain pattern, natural warmth, and exceptional hardness make it suitable for every room in the home. It accepts stains beautifully, ages gracefully, and provides the foundational material that ties an entire interior together.
Is white oak better than red oak for flooring?
White oak has become the preferred species for luxury interiors. It has a tighter grain than red oak, accepts cool and warm stains more evenly, and is slightly harder. Red oak's distinctive pink undertone makes it less versatile with contemporary color palettes.
How wide should hardwood planks be?
For luxury homes, we typically recommend 5" to 8" widths. Wider planks create a more dramatic, contemporary feel but require rift-sawn or quarter-sawn cuts to minimize seasonal movement. We select width based on the room's proportions and the home's architectural style.
