Luxury Interior Design in Charlotte, NC – Eastover Modern Estate
Not every Eastover home reflects the neighborhood's Colonial heritage, and not every homeowner desires a traditional interior. This modern estate commission challenged Emerald & Oak to create interiors that are unmistakably contemporary while respecting the surrounding architectural context — a design tension that produced some of the studio's most refined work.
The homeowners — avid art collectors with a passion for mid-century and contemporary sculpture — required interiors that function simultaneously as comfortable living spaces and as a curated gallery environment. Every wall, every light fixture, and every furniture placement was considered in relationship to the art it would surround.
Project Overview
This 6,800-square-foot modern estate features open-plan living spaces on the main level, a dedicated gallery corridor, four bedroom suites, a home office, and a lower-level entertainment wing. Emerald & Oak provided full-service interior design including space planning, material specification, custom furniture design, art placement consultation, and whole-home furnishing. The project was completed over 18 months.
Design Approach: Gallery Living
The design vocabulary borrows from museum exhibition design: clean sight lines, controlled lighting, and neutral material palettes that allow artwork to command attention. Walls throughout the main level are finished in a smooth Venetian plaster in a warm white tone that provides subtle texture without competing with art. Lighting combines adjustable picture lights with a layered ambient system that can transition between gallery brightness and intimate evening warmth. Furniture is positioned to create natural viewing distances from key artwork, with seating groups oriented to facilitate both conversation and art appreciation.
Custom Cabinetry & Millwork
Millwork in this modern estate is characterized by precision and restraint. Kitchen cabinetry features handleless fronts with integrated push-to-open mechanisms, creating an uninterrupted surface that reads as architectural rather than functional. The material is rift-cut white oak with a clear matte finish, allowing the grain's subtle straight lines to provide the only surface texture. A concealed bar behind pivot-hinged wall panels in the living room disappears completely when not in use. The home office features a floating desk integrated into full-wall shelving — a single piece of architectural furniture that defines the room.

Materials & Finishes
Materials were selected for their quietness — surfaces that add warmth and texture without visual noise. Flooring is wide-plank quarter-sawn white oak in a natural matte finish. Countertops are honed Pietra Cardosa — a gray Italian limestone with a matte, velvety surface. Bathroom walls feature large-format porcelain panels in a concrete finish, with frameless glass enclosures that maintain the room's spatial openness. Hardware throughout is brushed stainless steel — minimal, functional, and deliberately understated.
Art Integration & Lighting Design
Emerald & Oak worked directly with the homeowners' art advisor to plan the interior around specific acquisitions and anticipated future pieces. Each wall was evaluated for its relationship to natural light, ceiling height, and adjacent surfaces. A museum-grade picture hanging system was installed on a dedicated rail that runs continuously through the main level and gallery corridor, allowing artwork to be repositioned without wall damage. Lighting was specified in collaboration with Peters Audio Video, with each art location receiving independently controllable LED picture lights with adjustable color temperature.
