Whole Home Interior Design
Whole-home interior design is the most rewarding scope of work we undertake — and the most transformative for our clients.
What is whole-home interior design?
Whole-home interior design is a comprehensive engagement where a single design firm creates a unified interior vision across every room in the residence — from primary living spaces to bedrooms, bathrooms, closets, laundry rooms, and outdoor areas. Unlike room-by-room design, whole-home design ensures that every space shares a cohesive material language, consistent proportions, and intentional transitions.
How long does a whole-home design project take?
Depending on scope and whether construction is involved, whole-home projects typically span 12 to 24 months. A furnishing-only whole-home commission may require 8 to 14 months. A whole-home design integrated with new construction or major renovation may extend to 24 months. We provide a detailed timeline during planning and manage every milestone proactively.
How much does whole-home interior design cost?
Design fees for whole-home engagements typically range from $100,000 to $300,000+ depending on the number of rooms, level of customization, and whether construction is involved. Furnishing budgets are separate and typically range from $200,000 to $1,000,000+ based on the home's scale and quality expectations. We provide transparent proposals with detailed cost breakdowns.
Can we phase a whole-home project over time?
Yes — we frequently develop the complete design strategy upfront, then implement in phases aligned with your budget and timeline. The critical step is establishing the unified Design DNA first, so that rooms completed in later phases still feel connected to those completed earlier. This approach is particularly popular for large-scale renovations.
Is whole-home design only for new construction?
Not at all. Whole-home design is equally valuable for comprehensive renovations, for homes purchased with the intent to update, and for clients who are furnishing a recently completed residence. Any situation where multiple rooms need to feel cohesive benefits from the whole-home approach.
How do you maintain design coherence across 20+ rooms?
We develop a comprehensive Design DNA document before designing any individual room. This establishes the flooring hierarchy, metal palette, stone family, wall treatment zones, and textile language — governing every subsequent decision. Each room is designed within this framework, and our founder personally reviews every specification to ensure the unified vision is maintained.
What if we want different moods in different rooms?
Absolutely — that's the art of whole-home design. A library should feel different from a kitchen. A child's room should feel different from the primary suite. The key is achieving variety within coherence: different moods and functions expressed through a consistent material and proportional language, so the home feels diverse yet unified — like movements in a symphony rather than songs from different playlists.
Do you design every room including closets and laundry?
Yes. In our whole-home engagements, every room receives design attention — including walk-in closets, laundry rooms, mudrooms, pantries, and utility spaces. These functional rooms benefit enormously from thoughtful organization, appropriate lighting, and material selections that match the home's overall standard. A beautifully designed laundry room transforms a chore into a pleasant experience.
How is whole-home design different from full-service design?
Full-service design describes our level of involvement — complete creative leadership from concept through installation. Whole-home design describes the scope — every room in the residence. Most of our whole-home engagements are full-service, meaning we manage every detail of every room. However, you could engage us for full-service design on a single room. The distinction is scope, not service level.
How much does it cost to furnish an entire house?
For a luxury residence of 4,000–10,000 square feet, expect $200,000–$1,000,000+ in furnishings depending on quality level, degree of customization, and whether you're starting from empty. This includes all furniture, lighting, rugs, art, window treatments, and accessories — sourced from trade-exclusive brands, delivered, and installed with white-glove precision.
How many rooms should I design at once?
We strongly recommend designing all rooms simultaneously — even if implementation is phased. Establishing the complete Design DNA upfront ensures every room shares a coherent material language and proportional sensibility. Designing room-by-room over time almost always produces a disjointed result, because each phase reflects a different moment in your evolving taste.
What does a whole-home interior designer do differently?
A whole-home designer thinks in systems, not rooms. We establish a flooring hierarchy, metal palette, stone family, and textile language that governs every space — then design each room as a variation within that framework. The result is a home that feels curated rather than assembled, where every threshold transition is intentional and every corridor has purpose.
What makes a whole-home design feel cohesive versus decorated?
Coherence comes from decisions made at the system level — not the room level. When a designer selects materials room by room, the home inevitably feels assembled. When a designer establishes the material palette, metal finishes, flooring hierarchy, and lighting temperature before designing any individual room, the home feels composed. This systematic approach is what transforms a collection of rooms into a residence.
