Residential interior design is the professional practice of creating functional, beautiful interiors for private homes. Unlike commercial or hospitality design, residential design must accommodate the deeply personal rhythms of family life — daily routines, entertaining patterns, children's needs, and the emotional qualities that make a house feel like home. At Emerald & Oak, we practice residential design at its most comprehensive: from spatial planning and architectural detailing through material specification, furnishings, and installation.

Decorating addresses surface-level aesthetics — paint colors, furniture, and accessories. Residential interior design encompasses the entire interior environment: spatial planning, architectural modifications, construction coordination, material specification, lighting design, custom millwork, and furnishings. At Emerald & Oak, we practice the latter with the rigor and sensibility of an architecture firm — managing every layer from structure to styling.

Design fees range from $35,000 for focused engagements (a primary suite or kitchen transformation) to $250,000+ for comprehensive whole-home commissions. Furnishing budgets are separate and vary based on scope, quality level, and customization. We provide transparent proposals after an initial discovery conversation so you understand every dimension of the investment.

While our practice is oriented toward comprehensive engagements — whole-home design, new construction, and significant renovations — we do accept focused single-room commissions when the scope and ambition warrant our level of involvement. A kitchen renovation, primary suite transformation, or significant living room redesign can each be meaningful projects in their own right.

Every commission begins with deep listening — not a questionnaire, but a genuine immersion into your family's routines, values, and aspirations. We visit your current home, observe how you live, and have unhurried conversations about what matters most to you. We do not impose a signature aesthetic. Instead, we translate what we learn about you into a design that feels like a natural extension of the people who inhabit the home.

We serve all of Charlotte's premier residential neighborhoods including Myers Park, SouthPark, Eastover, Dilworth, Ballantyne, Foxcroft, Cotswold, and beyond — as well as Lake Norman, Lake Wylie, Union County communities (Weddington, Marvin, Waxhaw), and select national markets for clients seeking our standard of design excellence outside the Charlotte area.

Designing for real life — including active children and beloved pets — is fundamental to our approach. We specify performance fabrics that resist stains and clean easily, durable flooring that hides scratches and claw marks, and layouts that accommodate play, homework, and muddy paws. A luxury home should be lived in fully, not preserved behind velvet ropes.

Timelines depend on scope. A focused room redesign may take 4 to 6 months. A kitchen or bath renovation typically spans 8 to 14 months. A whole-home furnishing commission requires 8 to 14 months. And a comprehensive new construction collaboration spans 18 to 24 months. We establish clear milestones during planning and manage every deadline proactively.

You can certainly furnish a home yourself — many people do. The question is whether the result will reflect the quality of life you've built in every other dimension. Professional interior design eliminates the costly mistakes (wrong-size furniture, incompatible materials, poor lighting), saves enormous time, provides access to trade-exclusive resources, and produces a level of coherence and refinement that is extremely difficult to achieve independently. For homes valued at $750,000 or more, the investment in professional design typically pays for itself in avoided mistakes and increased home value.

Look for a portfolio that demonstrates coherent, whole-room and whole-home design — not isolated vignettes. Look for construction knowledge — can the designer read plans and coordinate with your builder? Look for transparent communication about fees, process, and timeline. And look for personal chemistry: you will work closely with your designer for months or years, and the relationship should feel like a trusted partnership, not a transactional arrangement.
