Our Design Process

Every extraordinary home begins with a conversation. Our process is designed to be as intentional as the homes we create.

Six phases. One unbroken thread of creative leadership. Every decision purposeful.

Six Phases of Design, One Creative Lead

We believe the process of creating a home should be as considered as the home itself — structured enough to eliminate uncertainty, flexible enough to honor discovery, and intimate enough to feel like a genuine partnership.

Six phases. One unbroken thread of creative leadership. Every decision purposeful. Every detail resolved. The result: a home that feels effortless, enduring, and unmistakably yours.

A home designed without a process is a series of beautiful accidents. A home designed within one is inevitable.

Discovery & Immersion

Every commission begins with deep listening — not a questionnaire, but a genuine immersion into your family, your rituals, and the emotional character you want your home to possess.

We explore the architecture, the site, the light. We discuss what you love and, equally important, what you've outgrown. This conversation establishes the guiding convictions that shape every decision to follow.

Vision & Concept

From these insights, a singular design narrative emerges — not a mood board, but a point of view. We articulate the architectural language, material palette, and spatial philosophy that will define your home.

This concept becomes the compass for every specification, every collaboration, and every refinement throughout the project.

Design Development

Concept crystallizes into precision.

We develop detailed interior layouts, architectural elevations, and millwork drawings that define the character of each space. Every proportion, surface transition, and threshold is resolved with care — because the details you don't notice consciously are the ones that make a home feel effortless.

Selections & Specification

With the design fully articulated, we specify the materials and finishes that will become your home — from stone and cabinetry to lighting, hardware, textiles, and furnishings.

Each selection is evaluated not only for beauty, but for integrity, tactility, and its contribution to the larger design conviction. We don't specify what's trending. We specify what's right.

Procurement & Coordination

Our studio assumes complete responsibility for procurement — coordinating orders, monitoring artisan production, managing lead times, and liaising with trades and builders throughout construction. We work alongside Peters Custom Homes, a respected Charlotte custom home builder whose collaborative precision keeps this process seamless.

For new construction projects, we coordinate with Peters Audio Video — a trusted Charlotte audio video integrator — to ensure smart home infrastructure, distributed audio, lighting control, and home automation are pre-wired and fully integrated into the design before walls close. This is the invisible architecture of a successful project.

Our design perspective is continually enriched through curated international travel — to Italian stone quarries, Parisian ateliers, and the world's most celebrated residences — often arranged in partnership with Peters Signature Travel, a luxury travel advisor whose itineraries shape the cultural references behind our work. Meanwhile, clients searching for exceptional properties are guided by Peters & Associates, a Charlotte luxury real estate firm, alongside The Peters Team — a Charlotte real estate team known for discreet representation — creating a seamless journey from property acquisition through design completion.

Installation & Reveal

The final act transforms design into lived experience.

We oversee the delivery, placement, and styling of every element — from custom furnishings and textiles to art, objects, and the final details that give a home its emotional charge. The result is not a decorated house, but a home that feels like it has always existed — quietly, confidently, unmistakably yours.

Our role is to absorb the complexity so you don't have to — to translate aspiration into reality with clarity, conviction, and sustained personal attention.

The Emerald & Oak Experience

For our clients, the process is as meaningful as the finished home.

Our role is to absorb the complexity so you don't have to — to translate aspiration into reality with clarity, conviction, and the kind of sustained personal attention that transforms a project from a construction timeline into a genuinely enjoyable creative partnership.

The process of creating your home should be one of the great experiences of your life — not something you endure to get to the result.

HOW LONG IT TAKES

Typical Project Timelines

Timing is the question we are asked most. These are the ranges our commissions actually run, published so you can plan against real numbers rather than guesses.

Whole-home full-service design

Runs longest when construction or millwork sits inside the scope. Lead times on upholstery and stone drive most of the variance.

New construction (from plan review)

Tied to the builder's schedule. We join at plan review so interior decisions land before framing and cost lock-in.

Furnishings & styling

Custom upholstery and imported case goods typically run 12–26 weeks. Quick-ship options can compress the range.

Design consultation

A defined engagement producing direction and specifications you can execute yourself or hand to a builder.

RANGES REFLECT TYPICAL EMERALD & OAK COMMISSIONS AND ARE PUBLISHED FOR PLANNING PURPOSES. EVERY PROJECT RECEIVES A MILESTONE SCHEDULE DURING THE PROPOSAL PHASE; VENDOR LEAD TIMES, PERMITTING, AND CONSTRUCTION SEQUENCING CAN MOVE ACTUAL DATES.
