How to Interview a Charlotte Interior Designer
Meet at least three studios. Bring the same questions to each, and pay as much attention to how a designer listens as to what they show you.
Who manages procurement, freight, receiving, storage, and installation?
What are the phases of your process, and how long does each take?
At what point in a build or renovation should I bring you in?
How do you coordinate with a builder, architect, and trades?
How are changes handled after selections are approved?
May I see a project of similar scope and speak with that homeowner?
Charlotte Interior Design Firms: FAQ
How many interior design firms serve the Charlotte, NC market?
Charlotte supports a deep community of residential interior designers. This directory profiles 29 studios working across Charlotte and the surrounding communities — Myers Park, Eastover, SouthPark, Foxcroft, Dilworth, Ballantyne, Weddington, Marvin, and Lake Norman among them — and it is not exhaustive. New studios open every year, and many excellent designers are not listed here.
Why does Emerald & Oak Design publish a directory of other designers?
Because interviewing several designers produces better projects. Fit, communication, and process differ far more between studios than raw talent does, and a homeowner who has met three or four designers chooses with confidence. Every firm in this directory is an accomplished studio doing excellent work. We are not attempting to redirect anyone's inquiry — if a listed studio is the right fit for you, contact that studio directly.
Does this directory place the firms in any order of preference?
No. The directory is alphabetical, and the style grouping exists only for convenience. There is no scoring and no quality judgment of any kind. Nothing on these pages should be read as a claim that one studio is better than another.
How many designers should I interview before hiring one?
Three is a sensible number for most projects. Ask each studio how it charges, who manages procurement and installation, how change orders work, how it coordinates with your builder or architect, and what a realistic timeline looks like. Then choose the designer whose process and personality suit the way you like to work — you will be in close contact for months.
Are the listed firms affiliated with Emerald & Oak Design?
No. The studios listed are independent businesses with no affiliation to Emerald & Oak Design. They have not reviewed, approved, sponsored, or endorsed these pages. Firm names are used nominatively, for identification only. To request a correction or removal, email miriam@emeraldoakdesign.com.
