Lighting is the most influential and least understood element of interior design. It determines how colors appear, how materials reveal their texture, how rooms feel at different times of day, and whether a space communicates warmth or coolness, intimacy or grandeur. Yet in many homes — even expensive ones — lighting is treated as a utilitarian afterthought: a grid of recessed cans controlled by a single switch, supplemented by whatever decorative fixtures caught the homeowner's eye in a showroom.
