Interior Design for Cornelius
Cornelius sits at the heart of the Lake Norman community — a growing town of luxury waterfront estates, modern new construction, and established neighborhoods that attract families seeking the best of lakeside living with proximity to Charlotte's urban amenities.
Emerald & Oak Design serves Cornelius homeowners with the same level of attention and material quality we bring to Charlotte's most established neighborhoods, creating interiors that complement the Lake Norman lifestyle — relaxed, refined, and connected to the water.
About Cornelius
Cornelius is a town in northern Mecklenburg County, incorporated in 1905 and named for Joseph B. Cornelius. It grew from a small cotton town into one of the main lakefront communities on Lake Norman after the lake was filled in the 1960s, and it has a large share of the lake's Mecklenburg shoreline. Its neighborhoods include waterfront homes on coves and peninsulas as well as inland subdivisions, and the town has marinas, lakefront parks and a small historic downtown. Interstate 77 connects Cornelius to Charlotte to the south.
Waterfront & New Construction Design
Cornelius is experiencing significant luxury development, with new homes that demand sophisticated interior design from the very first blueprint. We collaborate with builders and architects to ensure that interior selections — from flooring and cabinetry to lighting and window treatments — are integrated into the construction process rather than applied as an afterthought.

Designing a Waterfront Home on a Cornelius Cove
With a large share of Lake Norman's Mecklenburg shoreline, Cornelius has many homes set on coves and peninsulas, where the shape of the lot decides the shape of the house. On a peninsula, views can run in two or three directions, so main rooms are planned to borrow light and water views from more than one side, and furniture is arranged so seating faces the lake rather than the television. On a cove, the water is closer and calmer, and docks and boathouses — which need Duke Energy approval as the lake's manager — become part of everyday life, along with the sand, swimsuits and towels that come with it. That makes a hard-wearing lake-level entry, a laundry close to the back door and outdoor storage worth planning from the start. Inland neighborhoods in Cornelius ask different questions, closer to suburban family homes, but even there the lake often shapes weekends and the way the house is used.
- Multi-directional views on peninsula lots
- Duke Energy approvals for docks
- Lake-level entries and laundry
- Seating oriented to the water
